Description

Visit to the monastery of St. Pedro de Cardeña

10 kilometres away from Burgos city centre a monastery is located, currently inhabited by Cistercians monks of the Strict Observance Order, also known as “Trappists”.

The monastery dates back to the visigothic era and it was inhabited by Benedictine monks. The building has undergone numerous transformations; therefore, several styles are coexisting on it. Its highlights are the Romanic style Cidiana Tower, the Martyrs Cloister from the 12th century, the Capitular Room from the 13th century, the church which was rebuilt in the 16th century and San Sisebuto’s Chapel, where the Cid and his wife Jimena were buried until the 19th century.
