TOURING THE PROVINCE OF BURGOS
The Bureba:

A northeastern region of the province, it offers a wide range of options for its art, history and landscape. Small Romanesque churches that have witnessed the adventures of relevant figures such as Almanzor, Sancho the Elder and the Cid, and impressionistic touches of wheat fields and fruit trees from the Valley of the Calderechas make up the picture of this land.

The Bureba, which is known as "Castile's granary", stands out for its picturesque villages: Briviesca, the capital; Oña, kings' pantheon; Poza de la Sal, with its Roman salterns; Frias, crowned by its slender castle; and the sanctuary of Saint Casilda, patron saint of the region.

The Merindades:

It's the northernmost part of the province of Burgos which combines valleys, forests, rivers, waterfalls and caverns as well as Romanesque churches, palaces and castles.

Our Association proposes a guided visit to Medina de Pomar for its interesting urban setting, which stands out for the Monastery of Santa Clara and for the Historical Museum of the Merindades situated in the ancient Velasco family fortress from the XIVth century known as "The Towers".

Another visit which is not to be missed is the Romanesque heritage in the Valley of the Mena, particularly the temples of Santa Maria in Siones and of San Lorenzo in Vallejo de Mena.

The Banks of the Duero:

The Burgalese Banks of the Duero are irrigated by the legendary Duero river and they make up a land which is well-known for its wine and for its gastronomy, apart from the fact that it stands out for its interesting cultural heritage.

We invite you to travel back to the time when the Romans built in our land one of the biggest and most important cities of the Roman Hispania: CLUNIA SULPICIA. We'll be able to admire the theatre, which was built for an audience of 9,000 people, the forum, the thermal baths - with a surface area of 7,000 square metres -, and the open-air mosaic of stately houses.

Following winding roads among large vineyards, we will get to the town of Peñaranda de Duero, the Monastery of the Vine, Santa Maria's Church in Aranda de Duero and the historical convent monuments in Caleruega that evoke Saint Domingo de Guzman.

The Route of Arlanza:

There are three stops to be made along this route: Silos, where you can enjoy visiting one of the best Romanesque cloisters.

Covarrubias, where you can see the traditional architecture typical of this highland region. There is also the triptych of the Adoration , which can be found in the Collegiate Church of Saint Cosme and Saint Damian.

And, last but not least, there is Lerma, which affords a superb view of the meadow of the Arlanza from its viewpoint in the Ducal Square, near the Palace, converted today into a Tourist Parador.
