ROUTES AROUND THE CITY OF BURGOS

The Route of the Light:

When it gets dark in Burgos, its Cathedral, its Castle, its monasteries, churches and palaces become the main figures of the city. These monuments gleam in the light that illuminates them, and they offer us a beautiful sight which could not be contemplated in the past.

The Route of the Light consists of a trip at night around lit up monuments. The route takes us around narrow and steep streets which show at every corner traces of our city's historical past. The most eagerly awaited point of the route comes when we reach the top of the Castle hill. From there we can see the city bathed in light.

The Road to Santiago (World Patrimony):

Situated on the road to Santiago, the city of Burgos grew and developed when medieval pilgrimages were at their height. This is the reason for its longitudinal layout and at that time it also helped the development of crafts as well as artistic and trading activities.

If we start our Pilgrim's Way at San Juan Square, we will walk through the same streets as thousands of pilgrims have done for centuries. We can stop on the way and admire monuments and buildings such as the Monastery of San Juan, Saint Lesmes church, the Cathedral and its entrance door - named la Coroneria -, the Palace of Castilfale and Saint Nicholas Church.

The West Indian route of Burgos:

Between 1493 and 1524 Juan Rodriguez de Fonseca was the Crown's counsellor for American matters. The new discoveries, from Columbus' second voyage until the first journey around the world, were not only to enlarge the picture of the world known until then but they were also to broaden the horizons of Castile and its people. In Burgos, head of the kingdom which incorporated the lands at the far end of the Atlantic, a group of power was formed around Fonseca. For three decades of great significance, decisions which had far-reaching implications for the history of humanity were taken in our city, in places which are part of our everyday surroundings today. If we go back to the past, these places open up before us an incredibly amazing world which had great expectations for the future.
